Garden Tour 2017

The gardens have now been chosen and are ready to bloom!  Every year we have had fabulous gardens each with its own special features ranging  from small, hidden, city-like gems through to expansive acreages carved out of the west-coast rain forest with wonderful views of the Sooke basin.  The tradition carries on in 2017.

This year we will have 8 fabulous gardens and a “destination garden”, the Artisan’s Garden, that is not to be missed.  Members from the Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra will also be providing music in a couple of the gardens and there will also artists’ demonstrations and opportunities to purchase garden themed artwork. Last year’s artisans Bev Petow (metal arts) and Michel DesRochers (painting) are back by popular demand.  There will also be some interesting new displays by Stephanie Sprinkling and the local store, B&K Jewellers and Gifts.

This year you can also buy your ticket through Eventbrite.  Remember to bring your voucher to the first garden to exchange it for the ticket/map that guides you through the tour.  And remember to get your tickets early as almost always sell out!!

Garden Tour Tips

Here are a few tips for ensuring you have a wonderful visit to our Sooke Secret Gardens:

*  Follow the garden numbers on the map and garden descriptions for the most direct route around the tour or choose your own.  There will be balloons and Garden Tour road signs to help you find all the gardens.

*  Shuttle services will be available if required for gardens with challenging access.  These will be marked on the ticket/map.

*  Bring a camera and notepad to record garden ideas and tips.

*  Wear comfortable clothing and non-slip shoes.

*  Be prepared for changing weather.

*  Bring bags or boxes for plant sale purchases.

*  Please respect the hosts and their privacy.

*  Bring cash!  In case you want to buy some of the artisan’s works, refreshments or plants.

*  Look for the many volunteers who are there to assist you.

*  Always drive with caution on unfamiliar roads.

How do we choose the gardens?

Many people ask how we choose our tours.  Starting in May or June of each year we face the challenge of finding new gardens for the following year.  Word of mouth, asking local landscapers, advertising and simply driving around looking are all useful ways of arranging the tour from year to year.  Our objective is always to select a variety of gardens, large, small, manicured, wild, some designed and maintained by their owners, others with the help of professional gardeners.  We look for some with waterfront, some with edible gardens, some rural acreages and, we hope, an interesting tour of Sooke’s beautiful back roads.  We often select a few from past tours to show their development and offer further inspiration to visitors.  If you have, or know of someone who has, a beautiful and interesting garden we’d appreciate hearing about it as we maintain a  list of  “to be considered” properties. For more information e-mail or call me, Margaret Lintern, directly at (250) 642-6747.
