About Sooke’s Secret Gardens

18688949472_1cd3c7d0a1_h 2018  will mark the tenth annual Sooke Secret Gardens Tour as a fundraiser for the Sooke Philharmonic Society. It  has always delighted gardening fans as it has evolved over the years.

The first Sooke garden tour was organized in 2000 by Women in Tune, a group of dedicated volunteers whose mission was to raise funds for the performing arts in Sooke.  This first tour proved to be a bit over ambitious, consisting of 17 gardens stretching from the tip of East Sooke out to French Beach!

In the winter of 2006, a hurricane damaged many local gardens including some that had been intended for the 2007 tour.  This, together with the Women in Tune’s decision to disband, led to the temporary demise of the annual garden tour.

However, just one year later, the fundraising committee of the Sooke Philharmonic  Society, inspired by the efforts of the Women in Tune, decided to re-establish the tour as a major findraiser for the Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus.

And so it remains.  Each year we find yet more beautiful and interesting gardens, and more gardeners who are willing to share the fruits of their hard work.  We are grateful to them all, past, present and future.
